Most of you are probably familiar with the plight of honeybees in America, and know that their populations are decreasing. The primary culprit, commonly referred to as colony collapse disorder, is still being studied, although there are several other suspects in their declining population, to include pesticides, mites, and other factors. What the heck do bees and wasps have to do with birds?? Plants are pollinated by a variety of flying insects, and with the decline in bees, it helps if we humans stop trying to kill off our other available pollinators. Wasps are common in our area, and we often have customers ask for wasp traps, which are containers baited with sugar water, designed to catch and subsequently drown the wasps which are trapped in them. We don’t sell these, primarily because wasps won’t bother you if you don’t bother them. I’m not saying to go catch wasps and see if you get stung, but throughout my entire life, I have never been stung by a wasp unless I was aggravating it by destroying its nest or (accidentally) stepping on it.
