Helpful Hummingbird Info

Homemade Nectar Recipe

Nectar is a 4:1 ratio of water to sugar.

  • Add 4 cups of water and 1 cup of pure white table sugar to a pot
  • Heat for 1-2 minutes
  • Allow to cool before filling feeders

Helpful tips!

  • Only use plain white granulated sugar! Sugar substitutes don't have the same nutritional value
  • Boiling isn't required to dissolve but does help slow the fermentation process
  • Nectar should be stored in the refrigerator to slow fermentation. Only make 1 weeks worth of nectar at a time! (Ratio is 4:1 and can be adjusted accordingly)
  • Clean feeders each time you refill to prevent any mold from growing

Cleaning Tips!

Get your sponges ready! Let's clean some hummingbird feeders!

All WBU Hummingbird Feeders are dishwasher safe but the below steps can still be used to effectively clean your feeders!

  • Empty out all excess nectar (nectar becomes contaminated once Hummingbirds touch it, so pour out any extra nectar!)
  • Completely take apart feeder including any bee guards, port flowers, or nectar guard tips
  • For a deep clean...soak all pieces in solution of hot water and unscented dish soap for 1-2 hours
  • Scrub with a sponge, cleaning mop, and/or port brush
  • Rinse well to get any excess dirt and soap off!
  • Allow to air dry

Hummingbird feeders should be rinsed every time you refill them (3-5 days) and deep cleaned every few weeks during peak feeding season.

How often should you change nectar?

Every 3-5 days (depending on some factors....)

  • If your feeder is in direct sun, it will need to be changed more often
  • As the temperature gets warmer, nectar will need to be changed more often
  • Don't want to change your nectar as often? We've got a solution!
  • Nectar Defender is an all natural solution that will keep your nectar fresher for longer
  • You can add it to the nectar you already have or purchase our nectar mix with added Nectar Defender!
